Romanto came up through the German underground in the early ’90s, spinning records before the culture had a name for what he was doing. By ’96, he was producing — not to ride a wave, but to make one. His early cut “Smilin’ Faces” hit dancefloors with a kind of raw elegance, a mix of soul and grit that didn’t ask permission. He wasn’t chasing trends. The records — Agent StyleSix Leaves Left — folded soul, hip-hop, and electro into something that felt lived in, like the echo of a party you wish you’d stayed at just a little longer.

He shared stages with giants, opened for Jamiroquai, lit up the Loveparade and E-Werk, but the music always came first.

Romanto didn’t need flash. Just a groove and a room that could feel it.

Here he takes on a certain Greek beau on German disco impress, Disco Machine Records.

The others are curious little spies. They want to know which mixes you stayed for, which ones you ghosted, whether you
