Do you like Daft Punk, Justice, Crazy P, Todd Terje, Lindstrøm? Pay attention!
Nelue has never been interested in easy nostalgia.
A decade after establishing himself as one of nu disco’s more distinctive voices through releases on Eskimo, Hed Kandi, ZE Records, Nang, Lovemonk and Solardisco, he returns with Rest_In_Peace.exe — an album that feels less like a comeback and more like a closing statement.
Drawing together the threads of his recent Teardrops and Trampled That Pressure EPs, while introducing three brand-new tracks, Rest_In_Peace.exe transforms scattered fragments into a complete artistic vision. This is the sound of an artist taking stock, drawing a line and deciding exactly what stays behind.
Along the way, familiar collaborators including K-Yel, Angie C, Funk Woman, WebSheldon and Rayan Peel return to the fold, joined by new voices such as Moon Crooner and the Gold Coast City Gospel Choir. The result is an album that feels both deeply personal and surprisingly expansive.
Opening with the French pop-disco-funk of Together, Nelue lets you know from the outset that quality reigns supreme. It’s an irresistible invitation into the world of Rest_In_Peace.exe and a statement of intent from the very first note.
In Between The Sheets dials things back with a raunchy yet sensual slab of funk. Driven by a relentless bassline, it locks the listener in place and delivers one of the album’s most immediate grooves.
The submissive Down On My Knees ups the tempo and draws inspiration from gospel traditions rooted in the Deep South — less church, more bedroom.
Taken from the Trampled That Pressure EP, the title track finds a natural home on Rest_In_Peace.exe. Far from feeling recycled, it fits the album’s narrative perfectly.
Love Enough To Know There’s Gonna Be Something Wrong, impossible title and all, radiates warmth from the album’s centre. Built around mesmerising vocal incantations, it is soulful, fluid and deeply immersive.
We take a sharp turn in the sonic landscape with Crazy V Meets Crazy P. Part homage, part exploration of new territory, it broadens the album’s palette without losing momentum.
With Not Crying Anymore, Nelue delivers an intelligent synth-driven intermezzo that gradually unfolds into something hopeful, ethereal and uplifting. It glides seamlessly into Debussy In Doha, where the influence of Jean-Michel Jarre becomes tangible. Vocals drift in from the Middle East carrying warmth and mystery, while cascading arpeggios weave an intricate tapestry beneath them.
As closing time approaches, Luminous Glow arrives as the album’s penultimate statement. A fully realised vocal track, it showcases Nelue’s ability to build, structure and expand an entire sonic universe.
Teardrops, originally featured on the EP of the same name, closes the journey with a stripped-back slice of robo-funk. Swooning vocals, gorgeous pads and understated funk improvisations provide a fitting farewell.
And so the journey concludes. With Rest_In_Peace.exe, Nelue has crafted an exquisite, potent and deeply immersive record — one that rewards close listening and reveals new details with every spin.
